The Story Behind the Cup
Every cup of Hasna’s Coffee carries a story — of family, of faith, of a community lovingly served, and of Ethiopian beans that have traveled thousands of miles to reach your hands.
Meet Sister Hasna
Long before Hasna’s Coffee became a brand, there was simply Sister Hasna — a woman whose generosity was known throughout North Austin. As a beloved pillar of the North Austin Muslim Community Center, Sister Hasna spent years volunteering her time, her kitchen, and her heart. Whether it was a community iftar, a neighborhood gathering, or someone who simply needed a warm meal, she showed up without hesitation.
Her teas, coffees, and home-cooked food became something people talked about. The warmth in every cup wasn’t just from the brew — it came from the person making it. Friends, neighbors, and community members would often say: “Sister Hasna’s coffee is unlike anything I’ve ever tasted.”
Word spread. Naturally, as it does when something is made with real love.
From Kitchen to Cart
What started as an act of service slowly grew into something more. Sister Hasna began sourcing coffee beans directly from Ethiopia — the very birthplace of coffee — and roasting them right here in Austin, Texas. The result was a cup that tasted like it came from both worlds: ancient tradition and Texas craft.
As demand grew and her loyal community of coffee lovers grew with it, Sister Hasna took the next step: she launched a small cart. A simple, humble beginning — but one filled with enormous intention. Her cart became a gathering place, a familiar face in the neighborhood, and a testament to what happens when passion meets purpose.
She’s excited for what’s ahead. And she’s hopeful — as she always has been.
Ethiopian Coffee: The Origin of It All
Ethiopia is not just where Hasna’s beans come from — it is where coffee itself was born. Legend traces the discovery of coffee to the Ethiopian highlands over a thousand years ago, where a goat herder named Kaldi noticed his flock dancing with energy after eating berries from a particular tree. That tree was the coffee plant.
Today, Ethiopia remains the world’s fifth-largest coffee producer and the only place where coffee still grows wild. Ethiopian coffees are unlike anything else on the market. Grown at high altitudes in rich volcanic soil, they carry natural flavor complexity that needs no embellishment — expect notes of jasmine, bergamot, blueberry, and dark chocolate depending on the region and process.
Regions like Yirgacheffe are celebrated worldwide for their bright, floral, and citrusy profiles. Harrar, in the eastern highlands, produces bold and wine-like beans with a signature mocha depth. Sidama offers a clean, balanced cup that has become a benchmark for specialty coffee globally.
When Sister Hasna sources directly from Ethiopian farmers, she’s not just buying coffee — she’s honoring a lineage. A culture. A ceremony that Ethiopians have practiced for generations, where coffee is brewed slowly, shared intentionally, and always offered with warmth.
A Mission Beyond Coffee
Sister Hasna’s mission has always been simple: help others. Coffee is the vehicle, but service is the destination. You’ll still find her volunteering diligently at the North Austin Muslim Community Center, showing up for those who need it most. Hasna’s Coffee donates a portion of proceeds to local community programs — because that’s just who she is.
When you buy a bag of Hasna’s beans or stop by her cart for a cup, you’re not just getting great coffee. You’re part of something bigger — a circle of community, care, and conscious sourcing that starts in the Ethiopian highlands and ends with a warm cup in your hands.
Thank you for being part of the story.
